The warmest day was on the 20th with 26.9C being reached, The coldest day was the 10th when 9C was the high while the day before yielded 24.2C as the high. Normally hot days produce unpleasant nights but like recent years we were lucky as the warmest night was a bearable 15.4C. June was a very wet month with 104.7mm falling with the heaviest rainfall on the 18th when 22.2mm fell with 13.3mm falling on the 14th. Temperatures for the month averaged 15.6C -1.1C boosted by the the very hot last day. The coldest day was the 9th with a cold 11.8C being the high. The coldest night was on the 4th with 8.4C. For once we did get some sticky nights with 17C.1 being the low on the 7th and 17C on the 13th. The month was warm mainly due to the nights which came in at 13.2C +1.4C above normal while the day time temperatures came in at 21.1C just 0.3C above average. Summer overall came in at 15.9C just 0.1C above normal. Rainfall slammed in at 317.8mm 163.3% of average. The sixth wettest on record. After a wash out summer would Autumn follow the same way. The heavy rain stopped for September with only 25.8mm falling for the month so a very dry month. Rainfall never reached double figures the wettest day with 7.6mm was the 23rd. A spell of 15 days just brought just 0.6mm of rainfall. Most of the month the temperatures hung around the upper teens but a short hot spell occurred on the 14th to the 15th when 25.4C and 27.2C were reached. October was a cool month by day and a average one by night. The month had very little temperature variation the warmest day being 20th with 16.4C while the 26th just saw 9.3C. Nights saw single figures with the warmest being the 21st with 9.7C while the coldest being 23rd with 2.5C. The month didn't see any windy days and was a start of a fairly quiet autumn in that regard. The month closed with average temperatures 13.7C and with 126.1% of the monthly average. November was a cool month and in contrast to October very dry with only 38.4mm of rainfall. The month started on a very warm note with 17C being reached but it soon turned colder. Light winds allowed smoggy conditions to form after November the 5th and it took to the 8th for the smog to finally clear away. The weather was mild from the 9th to the 18th with 14.1C being reached on the 17th. A cooler spell from the 23rd brought the averages down with an rare air frost being recorded on the 28th when -0.5C was the low. The warmest night was 18th with 11.1C being the low and the 2nd also was in double figures with 10C. Never a windy month continuing the quiet autumn weather. A fairly uneventful month finished a quiet uneventful autumn. November came in at 6.1C -0.7C below normal. Autumn overall finished on 10.5C overall. +0.2 above normal while rainfall came in at 168.6mm just 74.1% of average. December the first month of the winter has one interesting point. Once over 6C we had never had a cold winter. Closest was 71/72 were Jan or Feb were both average months otherwise Winter shave been mild. The other thing I was looking at whether December would be mild enough for us to record the warmest year on our records going back to 1955. As it was the month came in close to average and the warmest year ever record wasn't broken. The month was the fifth month of the year to record over 100mm and the third wettest month of the year. The month started cold enough for some Snow to fall on the 3rd and 4th although it wasn't enough to settle. By the 8th it started to slowly grow milder and by the 17th temperatures reached double figures one three days to this the others being the 18th and the 21st. The warmest being 12.5C on the 18th and 11.3C on the 17th and 21st. By the 17th it looked possible that the 6C mark would be broken but then from 21st it started to turn cooler and finally cold from the 27th. The coldest day was on the 28th when 1.9C was the high and the coldest night on the 31st when -1C was reached. Rainfall heavy rain brought 14.2mm of rain on the 4th including some snow. The 13th saw 13.6mm and 18th 15.7mm. The 23rd saw the heaviest rainfall on the month of 23.5mm while storm Bella didn't bring any strong winds but another 21.4mm of rain on the 26th. Rainfall amounts after 26th were small and the days mostly dry apart from a some Snow on the 28th. Never a windy month with Bella only producing a gusts of 35mph continuing the quiet year in regards to windy weather. The cold spell at the end of the month bringing December back to average in regards to temperatures. The final month in the year finally drove a nail through the chance of getting the warmest year ever in the end coming in 4th joint warmest on record with 10.5C being the final figure. Rainfall wise it failed to reached the top ten however it did record 5 months with rainfall above 100mm tying with 2000, 1986 and 2002 and only beaten by 2012 and 2019.

A spell of 15 days just brought just 0.6mm of rainfall. Most of the month the temperatures hung around the upper teens but a short hot spell occurred on the 14th to the 15th when 25.4C and 27.2C were reached. The coldest day was on the 28th when 1.9C was the high and the coldest night on the 31st when -1C was reached. Rainfall heavy rain brought 14.2mm of rain on the 4th including some snow.

Yearly Report 2020

The was a memorable one for reasons mostly none weather related. Overall the year is one of the warmest on record but failed to be the warmest which still belongs to 1999. The year had eight named storms. Brendan,Ciara,Dennis,Jorge.Ellen.Frances and at the time of writing Bella. Wind wise none had real any impact and the year was notable for a lack of any wind storms. Rainfall wise this was a different matter. So lets deal with the storms first. Brendan this arrived on 13th to 14th and didn't have any real impact either wind wise of rain wise and was a none event here. The next one Ciara arrived on the 8th and 9th of February. This managed to produce a high gust of 41 mph so certainly not a storm in regards to winds. However rainfall wise it produced 37.1mm of rainfall mostly sleet. So for that it does managed the status of a rain storm. The next one Dennis which arrived on the 15th to 16th failed to be a menace wind wise a pathetic 36mph was the high. However rainfall wise it produced 41.1mm of rain. The next named storm was Jorge which arrived on the 28th to 1st of march. This had was memorable for the lack of action failing to produce much in rain or wind so certainly wasn't a storm not one the Borg would assimilate. There was a long wait for the next storm Ellen which arrived on the 19th to 20th of August and was promptly forgotten on the day as it had very little impact wind wise or rainfall wise. Another storm soon followed storm Francis which again was notable for being anything but a storm and was just the run of the mill damp day without only the few swaying twigs. Bella arrived on the 26th of December showed initial promise but winds never got going peaking at 35mph. Rainfall was the main threat from Bella producing 21.4mm the 2nd highest of the month. Looking at the months themselves. January 2020 was a very mild month and a very dry month. Normally dry month in Winter are cold but this bucked the trend. Snow fell over two days but didn't die and the month also produced two air frosts. Temperatures were generally in the range 8C or above with the warmest day being the 7th with 12.7C being recorded. The 14th was also notable as 12.2C was reached and double figures occurred on 8 days. The coldest day was a mild 6C on the 28th with average max coming out at 8.9C +2C above the 81-10 average. Nights were also mild despite two air frosts on the 19th and 20th of -0.4C and -0.5C. Nights coming in at +2.3C above normal. Rainfall only 56.1mm fell of which 32.8mm fell in three days. Only 69,3% of the monthly rainfall fell. The month was fairly quiet without any windy weather with the highest gust being 44mph on the 30th. This setting the mark for a quiet year to come. February was another mild month but this time very wet three times the normal rainfall. Despite being a mild month Snow fell on the seven days and sleet on six days. Only on Seven days did the high fail to breach 7C. The coldest day being 4.1C on the 11th while double figures were reached on six days with 12.2C being the high on the 9th and 11.9C on the 24th. The month produced only one air frost - 0.4C on the 7th while 7.9C was the low on the 1st. Day time temperatures came in +1.3C above normal while the night time weighed in at 1.3C as well. Rainfall heavy sleet on fell on the 9th with 29.5mm falling and then on the 15th 34.4mm of rain fell. 18.6mm fell on the 22nd and double figures were reached on the 28th and 12th. The total of 197.8mm also made the winter 2019/2020 a wet one 143.4% of the average rainfall. Winter came in a 5.8c overall. +1.4C above normal. It wasn't a stormy month in regards to winds with 46 mph being the highest gust. Spring who would have thought after a wet winter we would have the driest spring on record which was a great help on how people handled the lock down. It was very mild as well 6th warmest on record. March was a dry and only just above average month. The month produced 8 air frosts more than the winter months combined and it managed to Snow on the 2nd. The night time temperatures came in at 2C -0.8C below average. Day time temperatures came in at 10.5C +0.6C helped by the warm end to the month. This period saw 16.4C being reached on the 24th and then 17.2C on the 25th followed by 14.4C. The coldest nights were 6th with - 1.9C and -1.6C occurred on the 7th and 24th. The coldest night was reserved for the end of the month when -2.1C was the low. The warmest day also saw an air frost with a range of 18C for the day. A case of Woolley jumper first thing and shorts and T shirt for the afternoon. Most of the rainfall fell between the 7th and 9th with 20.7mm falling out of the monthly total of 36.7mm. The low total failing to make the top ten driest months though. From the 19th to the 31st only 2mm of rain fell. April was another very dry month this time making it into the top ten with only 12.6mm the 7th driest on record. 9.3mm of this falling on the the last three days as well. April was a very warm month coming at the 4th warmest on record averaging 10.3C. The day time came in at third warmest at 15.9C +3.2C above average however night time temperatures were just 4.6C, 0.5C above normal. This was due to some chilly nights with even an air frost of the 14th with -1.4C being recorded. There were some large daily ranges the 15th saw a high of 20.7C from a overnight low of 1C. Several days saw ranges of nearly 16C or more. The warmest day was the 10th when 22.2C was the high. Nearly matched a day later with 21.6C being reached. The 23rd saw 20C being as well. 12 nights saw temperatures below 4C. This mainly due to the dry sunny weather and clear skies. Rainfall there was hardly any. 3.3mm fell between the 1st and the 27th. May 2020 continued the dry theme. By day it was 8th warmest but by night it was simply average. It was the driest May on record with only 5.4mm with 2.8mm falling in one day. 0.9mm fell between the 1st and the 20th and no rain from the 25th. This made sure Spring 2020 was the driest on record and the 8th warmest. Despite being the 8th warmest there wasn't the any hot spell offset by colder spells. The warmest day was on the 20th with 26.9C being reached, The coldest day was the 10th when 9C was the high while the day before yielded 24.2C as the high. The period 10th to the 13th was cold spell of the month with an air frost on the 14th. However by day the temperatures hit 16.4C an impressive range of 17C.This was dwarfed by 18.7C range on the 7th when the low was 2C and the high 20.7C. The warmest spell was between the 18th to the 22nd where daytime temperatures were above 18.5C and the night time temperatures in double figures. The warmest night the 22nd with 12.5C being the low. This being matched on the 25th. After a dry spring and with Covid still causing havoc everyone hope for a nice warm hot summer. Sadly this didn't arrive with a cool July offset by a warm August and also plenty of rain. In contrast to the spring being the driest on record summer was the 6th wettest on record. August becoming the 2nd wettest on record. June started all right recording 25C on the 2nd however it turned cool until the 12th with temperatures only passing 16C on the 9th. The month bucked the trend with in regards to Thundery weather with Thunder being heard on 4 days with developing storm passing over on the 16thand one passing very close to the station on the 26th producing large hail within a mile of the station but only 1.1mm of rain at the station itself. This shows how local storms came be. The month did produce some hot unpleasant weather start from the 23rd with 26.2C being reached. Then 29.7C on the 24th followed by 29.9C and 28.6C. Normally hot days produce unpleasant nights but like recent years we were lucky as the warmest night was a bearable 15.4C. Nights for the first 11 days were all in single figures with the coldest night being the 9th with 6.1C being the low. June was a very wet month with 104.7mm falling with the heaviest rainfall on the 18th when 22.2mm fell with 13.3mm falling on the 14th. Despite being a 100+ month these were the only days double figures were reached. The month was close to average temperature wise coming in at +0.5C. July was another wet month 75.5mm 132.5% of the monthly average. A cool month despite one the hottest days ever recorded when 33.6C was reached on the 31st. The previous day was also hot at 26.1C but generally the month saw temperatures in the upper teams to low twenties. Most of the rain fell in the first nine days with 62.4mm falling. Only 13.1mmm fell for the rest of the month so really wasn't a bad month overall. Thundery activity was confined to the last day when a Thunderstorm brushed the station as it moved North East. Temperatures for the month averaged 15.6C -1.1C boosted by the the very hot last day. The coldest day was the 9th with a cold 11.8C being the high. Nigh times were in double figures the warmest night being the 18th with 15.3C while the coldest was 12th with 8.5C. August was a warm month yet only had four very hot days on the 7th when 29.2C was reached followed on the 10th with 27.7C and then 11th and 12th with 30.9C and 30.6C. After that it returned to more pleasant values. Thunder occurred on two days on the 11th early in the morning which produced 8.9mm and again on the 16th. It was another very wet month with 137.6mm being recorded. However the first 14 days only saw 9.8mm falling. This rapidly changed on the 16th as Thundery rain and embedded storm reached the region with 34.1mm of rain falling. The storms by then had died away just producing a few isolated lightning strikes.
